Just Breathe

My apple watch keeps reminding me to breathe. It’s possible that it has never been a more important suggestion.  I am trying to be mindful and actually breathe when prompted. Are you feeling overwhelmed?  Does the unknown pose more threat than at any other time in your life?  Has your life seemed to be turned upside down? It is a scary time.

It may sound trite but take some time today to breathe.  I mean really breathe.  Put her hand on your stomach and as you fill your abdomen with air, watch your hand rise.  Then hold your breath and count to four.  Release the air and as you release think of all your stress coming out with your breath.

Breathing is a way of connecting to your parasympathetic nervous system.  This is your rest and digest system.  And it speaks the language of deep breathing.  When you actively slow your breathing, you signal to your brain and your body that it is ok to relax.  When you are tense and your breathing shallower it keeps you in the sympathetic system which is designed to help you get away from or fight off danger.

Life is uncertain, and that has never been more evident than in the last few weeks. It is hard to anticipate what is coming next.  But we will get through this.  Life has always been outside of our control.  When things are going well, we can talk ourselves into believing we have more control than we actually have.

BE smart, take care of yourself and others. Stay away from people and follow the instructions of those who are trying to keep us safe. And remember to breathe!
